MANILA (DWDD) – Commission on Human Rights (CHR) joins the world in celebrating International Day of World’s Indigenous People tomorrow, August 9, 2016.
In a Press Conference held this morning, August 8, at the CHR compound, headed by CHR Chairperson Chito Gacson together with Ms. Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous People.
Participating also in the event were IPs leaders including Timuay Alim Bandara of the Supreme Council of the Timuay Justice and Governance and Alicia Agabas, Chairperson of Kalipulan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI).
Bandara said that “while we have a law—the Indigenous People Rights Act—that recognizes our right as indigenous peoples to manage our resources according to our systems, our rights are being violated as a result of projects such as minings and the governments’ counterinsurgency campaigns.”
Bandara added that the IPs are caught in the middle between the war of state forces and non-state forces that results in killing because of the disrespect in their cultural values and traditions.
However, Gacson states that “we are in solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples.” CLARISSE / MCAG
